Aila cancer news. It gets complicated...

• First visit with the oncologist Rebecca Bechhold.
• Type of cancer: Stage 1, Grade 1- estrogen receptor positive, low grade, non-invasive.
• The 2 tumors were small... the doc was surprised Aila palpated them. Bechhold said that the ‘reactive tissue’ surrounding the tumors may have made them feel larger.
• Estrogen and progesterone “feed” it (pathology slides of Aila’s cancer were stained and they show a sensitivity to hormones.) Chemo is not probable but not entirely ruled out dependent on another test of the tumors called the oncotype DX (a genetic/gene structure test). Results in 10 days to 2 weeks. If needed chemo will probably have Tomoxophen.
• Once chemo is ruled out treatment will be radiation (5x/wk x 6wk) and hormone blocker (5 years)
• Aila likes the MD and the cancer is a “no brainer” (typical, low grade, everyone does the same treatment) so Aila will not be seeking a second opinion
• Aila will see either the oncologist or the surgeon (Ho) every 3 months.
• Another surgery is necessary to get fatty cells around that are ‘pre-cancerous’ around margin of previous surgery. This will probably be next Friday, July 17^th. Good news: Eija will be here. Maybe we can get her to do the surgery—for free! This will be done under general, at Bethesda North Hospital.
  
• The wound form the previous surgery is producing an abundance of fluid and had to be drained at MDs office pretty much every day last week. A drainage tube was again placed in the site of drainage and now self-drains.
  
• Survival rate “90% at 10 years".
